I specialize in couples therapy. My training includes Encounter-centered Couples Therapy, Imago Relationship Therapy, The Developmental Model of Couples Therapy and The Gottman Method. My work with couples often integrates these approaches because there is no single approach that works for every couple. Together we will chart your course based on which approach best fits your needs.
SPOILER ALERT!! The goal of couples therapy is NOT to change your partner. For couples therapy to be successful you have to be interested in your own growth and healing as well as that of your partner. The goal of this work is to help both partners become more relationally mature; for each to take responsibility for their contributions to the quality of the relationship; for each be committed to do the work to grow through old blocks/defenses that create disconnection; and for each to be committed to a healthy connection with each other that supports the successful management of your different desires, interests and needs.
Individual Therapy: I primarily work with individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, family of origin issues, gender and sexual orientation issues and life stressors. I utilize a combination of approaches to help clients address their concerns from a cognitive perspective and integrate approaches from energy psychology to help clients experience healing and resolution as opposed to just better management of symptoms. Energy psychology encompasses those approaches that help when you can talk about an experience or issue until you are blue in the face but don’t feel any better for your effort. Sometimes when our fight/flight mechanism is activated and we are unable to do either one, the experience gets lodged in our body and we have to go beyond the level of words and cognitive approaches to feel better. Fortunately, many of these approaches have been developed and there is more help now than ever for addressing stuckness in our lives. I have been trained in and use the following approaches in the work I do with individuals: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR); Developmental Needs Meeting Strategy (DNMS); Clinical Hypnosis; and Grove Metaphor Therapy.
Education and Experience:I received both my BA 1985 in Psychology and my MSW 1987 from the University of Michigan. Along with being in private practice, I have worked in a variety of settings throughout my career: psychiatric inpatient; family service; nursing home; hospital; family practice residency; adjunct faculty in Sociology and Social Work; hospice; LGBT Community Center; and foster care. I offer private couples intensives, couples weekend workshops, therapy for couples and individuals, and training for therapists working with couples.

Jennifer L Paty MDiv
Jennifer is an Imago Educator, Couples Coach, Spiritual Director, Assistant Imago Getting the Love You Want Workshop Presenter and Ordained Minister. She studied both Eastern and Western spiritual practices during her formal education and continues as a life long learner in spiritual direction and theory of relationships. Jennifer retired with 20 years of active service in the U.S. Navy where she served as an Aviation Machinist, Career Counselor and finally a Command Master Chief.
She began her education and experience with Imago in 2005 the same year she took her first step on the journey with the advanced teaching of Hedy Schleifer's Adventures in Intimacy and Encountered Centered Couples Therapy.
Jennifer brings a unique and extremely valuable experiential understanding of how Imago and Encountered Centered Couples Therapy helps couples and individuals with issues surrounding addiction, PTSD and ADHD. She is professional, and personable and has an incredible ability to help couples find their own unique understanding during our workshops and through the private work she does with couples.
